Japan's six major ports handled 1.18 million TEUs of containers in October 2023, which shrank 6.3% from a year earlier and was their first year-on-year decrease in two months, according to preliminary statistics unveiled by the nation's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). Exports accounted for 600,179 TEUs, down 6.5%, and imports, 580,185 TEUs, down 6%.

Looking at individual performances, Tokyo processed 352,246 TEUs, down 10.4%, which consisted of 170,584 TEUs of exports, down 8.4%, and 181,662 TEUs of imports, down 12.2%. Kawasaki was another port to register a double-digit contraction, handling 7,479 TEUs, down 15.7%. Exports plummeted 14.5% to 3,934 TEUs, and imports a more significant 16.9% to 3,545 TEUs. In contrast, throughput improved 1.7% to 242,055 TEUs at Yokohama, which exported 128,597 TEUs, up 0.8%, and imported 113,458 TEUs, up 2.8%. Nagoya did even better, handling 232,939 TEUs, up 2%, of which exports climbed 0.1% to 122,232 TEUs, and imports grew a more notable 4.5% to 110,707 TEUs. Osaka processed 170,755 TEUs, down 11.1%, exporting 80,738 TEUs, down 12%, and importing 90,017 TEUs, down 10.3%. Containers to and from Kobe fell 12% to 174,890 TEUs, made up of 94,094 TEUs of exports, up 13.9%, and 80,796 TEUs of imports, down 9.7%.
