Japanese ports handled a total of 22.46 million TEUs of containers in 2021, which grew 3.7% from the previous year, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). Domestic shipments increased a notable 6.6% to 4.55 million TEUs, exceeding the volume in 2019, a year before the coronavirus pandemic began, and setting the second-highest yearly record. International containers improved a milder 3% to 17.91 million TEUs. Oceangoing shipments consisted of 8.92 million TEUs of exports, up 2.5%, and nine million TEUs of imports, up 3.5%.

Total oceangoing container throughput at the six major ports (Tokyo, Kawasaki, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka and Kobe), which are responsible for some 80% of such shipments traded to and from Japan, swelled 0.8% year on year in the first half (January-June) of this year. It has been learned from statistics compiled by the MLIT's Port and Harbor Bureau from preliminary figures released by their respective port administrators.
