Japan's five major ports (Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka and Kobe) handled 3,470,091 TEUs of containers in the first quarter (January-March) of this year, which improved 5.7% from a year earlier, according to the Harbor Modernization Promotion Committee. In contrast, containers to and from the seven quasi-major ports (Shimizu, Yokkaichi, Kitakyushu, Chiba, Kawasaki, Shimonoseki and Hakata) decreased 2.6% to 507,817 TEUs. The total volume of containerized shipments processed at the 12 ports increased 4.6% to 3,977,908 TEUs.

Looking at laden containers, exports from the five accounted for 1,038,353 TEUs, down 2%, and from the seven, 162,777 TEUs, down 1.8%, for a total of 1,201,130 TEUs, down 2%. Meanwhile, imports to the five grew 4.4% to 1,643,751 TEUs, but those to the seven shrank 4% to 231,173 TEUs. Imports of full containers, therefore, totaled 1,874,924 TEUs, up 3.3%.
