The World Shipping Council (WSC) is urging member states to maintain momentum and step up crucial work on developing pathways to decarbonizing shipping. The council recently commented on the 78th meeting of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC78), which was convened on June 6-10. It highly rated the meeting, saying that it saw good progress on the IMO greenhouse gas (GHG) strategy.

Meanwhile, agreement to establish the International Maritime Research Board (IMRB) and the International Maritime Research Fund (IMRF) was not achieved at MEPC78. Expressing disappointment, the WSC said that applied research and development is critical if it is to move forward with a major energy transition in the maritime sector.
