Container exports from Japan to the U.S. amounted to 58,408 TEUs in March (based on volumes at ports of destination), swelling 1.2% from the same month of last year and marking year-on-year growth for the third month in a row, according to Descartes Datamyne. There were increases of 28.9% from February 2022 and 3.1% from March 2020, indicating that container movement on the route is now as robust as it was prior to the outbreak of the coronavirus, the U.S. research company has unveiled.

However, direct shipments from Japan to the U.S. plunged 12% to 37,792 TEUs. Meanwhile, the remaining 20,616 TEUs were transshipped in third countries and regions, which ballooned 39.6% and exceeded the 20,000-TEU line for the first time. Transshipment (T/S) containers accounted for 35.3% of the total volume, which crossed the 30% mark for 11 straight months. South Korea processed 12,564 TEUs of T/S containers, up 15.9%, while China was responsible for 3,221 TEUs, up 67%. Those transshipped in Taiwan more than tripled, skyrocketing 251.9% to 2,442 TEUs.
