Container trade between South Korea and China decelerated in the first quarter of this year. A total of 800,460 TEUs were moved on the route in January-March, which shrank 1.84% from the corresponding three months of 2021, according to statistics compiled by the Yellow Sea Liner Shipping Council (YSLSC). Underlying factors included the Lunar New Year holidays commemorated in January and February and a lockdown imposed in Shanghai in March. Exports and imports between the economies accounted for 750,367 TEUs in total, down 1.05%, while the remaining 50,093 TEUs were moved in feeder services, down 12.39%.

Containers from South Korea to China totaled 318,956 TEUs, up 3.48%, which consisted of 296,638 TEUs of exports, up 3.48%, and 22,218 TEUs of feeder containers destined to third countries and regions, down 8.95%.

As for those from China to South Korea, meanwhile, 453,729 TEUs were carried as import shipments, down 4.4%, and 20,875 TEUs were moved in feeder services, down 14.78%, for a total of 481,604 TEUs, down 5.07%.
