Spot rates for container exports from the Chinese port of Shanghai continued to increase mildly on major trade routes in Week 49, the Shanghai Shipping Exchange (SSE) has announced.

Containers destined to Europe were moved at a rate of $7,597 per TEU, up 0.1%, while rates for those to the Mediterranean were more favorable, growing 0.9% to $7,314 per TEU. Freight rates improved in both directions on the trans-Pacific route, with those for containers to the east coast of North America rising a minute 0.3% to $10,644 per FEU and those for shipments destined to the west coast, a more notable 4% to $7,300 per FEU.

On north-south routes, spot rates for exports to the Middle East Gulf stood at $3,538 per FEU; to Australia and New Zealand, 4,459 per TEU; and to South America, $10,105 per TEU, all of which remained nearly unchanged.

In intra-Asia waters, exports were carried at a rate of $1,368 per TEU to Southeast Asia, which hiked a massive 8% and registered a year-on-year increase for five weeks in a row. In contrast, spot rates for those to Japan went down 0.7% to $298 per TEU on the route to Kansai and 3.4% to $288 per TEU on the route to Kanto.
