The Port of Tokyo handled 276,860 TEUs of loaded oceangoing containerized shipments in June, achieving a double-digit increase of 10% from the same month of 2020, according to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG)’s Bureau of Port and Harbor. Exports accounted for 83,061 TEUs, which also marked a double-digit improvement, surging 27.2%, while the remaining 193,799 TEUs were imported, which grew a much milder 4%. Meanwhile, a total of 86,742 TEUs of empty containers were exported and imported, which shrank 25.3%.

In the first half (January-June), Tokyo processed 1,612,905 TEUs of full containers, up 4.4% from the corresponding six months of last year, and 507,403 TEUs of empties, down 13.4%. Focusing on full containers, 469,412 TEUs were exported, up 11%, and 1,143,493 TEUs were imported, up 1.9%.
