The U.S. Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) discussed ongoing port congestion and supply chain disruptions in the country as one of the major topics at the open session of the commissioner meeting on Wednesday.

The key part of the session was interim recommendations provided by Commissioner Rebecca Dye which address current situations at U.S. ports where containers have been piled up incessantly, causing inefficiencies in supply chain and creating bottlenecks in the freight delivery system.

Commissioner Dye proposed eight interim recommendations to minimize barriers to private party enforcement of the Shipping Act, clarifying commission and industry processes, encouraging shippers, truckers, and other stakeholders to assist commission enforcement efforts, and bolstering the ability of the Office of Consumer Affairs and Dispute Resolution Services to facilitate fair and fast dispute resolution.

She urged a dialogue among supply chain players and unveiled plans to hold meetings of Supply Chain Innovation Teams in Memphis and the Port of Los Angeles to address supply chain disruptions and increase supply chain visibility.
