The United Nations Secretary General has confirmed that Since no TIR Convention signatories have filed objections to the new global legal framework for digitalized eTIR, it will enter into force on May 25, 2021

This key milestone signifies widespread support for transport digitalization and specifically for the International Road Transport Union's (IRU) and United Nations Economic Commission for Europe's (UNECE) efforts over many years to put in place a sound legal basis for a fully digitalized TIR system. The implementation of eTIR is expected to further smooth border crossings, reduce transport times and increase security.

As global trade gradually transitions to using digital solutions, eTIR represents a unique solution for the 21st century - by harnessing new technologies, it has the capacity to help digitalize road and intermodal transport. Originally designed as a paper-based solution, the TIR system now offers fully digital capacities, making international freight transits even faster, more efficient and more secure.
