Container exports to the U.S. from 10 major countries and regions in Asia amounted to 1,471,988 TEUs in February, swelling 32% from a year earlier, American research company Descartes Datamyne unveiled recently. Enjoying a year-on-year improvement for nine months in a row, they reached an all-time high for the month in question. Container imports to Asia in January, in contrast, plunged 12.8% to 440,353 TEUs.

Looking at outbound containers in February by origin, those from China, which plummeted 20% in the corresponding month of 2020, came back to soar 59.9% from a year earlier to 922,405 TEUs, registering a year-on-year increase for the ninth consecutive month. Those from South Korea shrank 1.1% to 135,862 TEUs. Container exports from Vietnam jumped 20.5% to 114,901 TEUs. Under the influence of COVID-19-related problems, those from Japan waned 43.6% to 22,351 TEUs, which went down 41.5% from a month earlier.

As for container imports in January, those to China fell 23% to 114,266 TEUs, suffering their first year-on-year contraction in three months. Those to Japan diminished 11.3% to 52,203 TEUs. To Vietnam, 49,414 TEUs were moved, up 3.9%, while Taiwan accepted 48,328 TEUs, down 12.2%. Those to South Korea plummeted 27.6% to 42,170 TEUs. As these figures show, four of the top five destinations—except for Vietnam—reported year-on-year decreases.
