Japan exported 935,000 tons of shipments to China in December 2020, growing 8.7% from a year earlier and registered a year-on-year improvement for six months in a row, according to the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). They were valued at ¥823.9 billion, which increased 9% from the corresponding month of 2019 and enjoyed the first year-on-year hike in two months.

Referring to trade statistics provided by the Ministry of Finance (MOF), the JMC added that imports from China to Japan shrank 1.1% to 1,712,839 tons, suffering a decrease from a year earlier for the eighth consecutive month. In terms of value, in contrast, they swelled 1.3% to ¥1.073 trillion, inflating year on year for the first time in six months.

In full-year total, outbound containers rose 1.8% to 9,897,000 tons but failed to exceed the 10-million-ton line for two consecutive calendar years. They were priced at ¥8.097 trillion, which inflated 1%. Incoming shipments, on the other hand, fell 8.3% to 19,726,000 tons. On a value scale, they declined 5.7% to ¥12.31 trillion.
