Containerized shipments traded in December 2020 between South Korea and eight other Asian economies decreased 2% from a year earlier to 346,100 TEUs. South Korea exported 183,100 TEUs, which improved 0.2%, but imports to it shrank 4% to 163,000 TEUs. On a full-year scale, as a consequence, a total of 3,988,000 TEUs were moved on the route last year, which fell 1.3% from the previous year’s 4,040,000 TEUs. Shipments from South Korea waned 3.6% to 2,042,900 TEUs from 2.120,000 TEUs. On the other hand, those to the nation increased 1.3% to 1,945,100 TEUs from 1,920,200 TEUs.

Looking at container movement in 2020 by route, those to and from Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and the Philippines all diminished from the previous year, down 9% to 527,200 TEUs, 2% to 469,700 TEUs, 1% to 235,700 TEUs and 8% to 230,100 TEUs, respectively.

In contrast, exports to and imports from Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Hong Kong all registered mild increases. They went up 1% to 1,228,800 TEUs, 1% to 494,600 TEUs, 4% to 450,700 TEUs and 1% to 351,000 TEUs, respectively. In particular, containers to and from Taiwan, where the number of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infections is less than any other economy in the world, both marked high growth rates. Exports to the state, more specifically, swelled 3%, while imports from it hiked a more notable 8%.
