The Chinese economy remained stable on a recovery track in August, helping China’s leading hub ports process more containers than a year earlier, according to the nation’s Ministry of Transport (MOT).

The overall volume of containerized shipments processed in the month in question at all ports across China grew 6.4% to 24.06 million TEUs in total. Coastal ports were responsible for 21.37 million TEUs, up 6.6%, while the remaining 2.69 million TEUs were moved to and from inland river ports, up 3.9%.

Individually, the Big Three all performed well, with Shanghai handling 3.84 million TEUs, up 2.1%; Ningbo-Zhoushan, 2.67 million TEUs, up 9.4%; and Shenzhen, 2.62 million TEUs, up 12%. Container throughput was favorable at Tianjin, too, which surged 10.3% to 1.72 million TEUs.

In the first eight months (January-August), a total of 168.07 million TEUs were imported to and exported from China, down 2.5%. The total consisted of 149.57 million TEUs to and from coastal ports, down 2.1%, and 18.5 million TEUs to and from inland river ports, down 5.6%.
