The Port of Kawasaki handled 81,075,209 tons of cargo in 2018, down 4.5% from the previous year. In breakdown, oceangoing shipments accounted for 50,727,297 tons, down 9.3%, and domestic cargo, 30,347,912 tons, up 4.4%.

Container throughput increased 13.6% to a new annual record of 146,894 TEUs. Oceangoing containers surged 20% to 118,578 TEUs in total. Exports and imports both increased, with the former soaring 32.3% to 58,851 TEUs and the latter amounting to 59,727 TEUs, which grew a milder 9.9%. In contrast, containers to and from other domestic ports fell 7.1% to a total of 28,316 TEUs. Outbound shipments plunged 19.2% to 14,831 TEUs, but inbound containers improved 11.2% to 13,484 TEUs.
