Containerized shipments moved on the Japan-South Korea trade in January fell 1.2% year on year to 156,047 TEUs, while those on the route between South Korea and China increased a notable 10.7% to 241,998 TEUs. However, transport demand is expected to grow on the Japan-South Korea trade, too, when the peak season sets in, or in March and April.

Between Japan and South Korea, local containers decreased 4.3% to 57,221 TEUs in January. Imports from South Korea to Japan fell 6% to 33,126 TEUs, while exports from Japan to South Korea waned 2% to 24,095 TEUs. As for transshipment (T/S), feeder cargo on trunk routes declined 4% to 21,764 TEUs, but T/S shipments relayed in South Korea to other Asian economies improved 2.1% to 77,062 TEUs.

On the South Korea-China route, meanwhile, containers from China to South Korea enjoyed a double-digit increase, soaring 15.4% to 178,042 TEUs, but those from South Korea to China were sluggish, going down 5.3% to 89,948 TEUs. Feeder cargo ballooned 66.3% to 21,373 TEUs, exceeding the 20,000-TEU line for the first time on a monthly scale.
