The number of secondhand vehicles - i.e., passenger cars, cargo freighters, busses and electric motorcars - exported from Japan in January amounted to 79,065 units, up 0.1%, enjoying the first year-on-year improvement in two months, according to figures unveiled by the International Auto Trade Association (iATA). Cargo movement was particularly brisk on the routes to Russia and Mongolia.

By country of destination, the iATA figures, compiled from trade statistics provided by the Ministry of Finance (MOF), indicated that exports to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) fell 1.2% to 10,732 units, but managed to hold the leading share of the pie.

The UAE was followed by New Zealand, to which 6,751 units were exported, down 9.2%. Ranked third were exports to Russia, which marked a four-fold increase to 6,266 units. Shipments to Mongolia, the fourth largest destination, were also massive, skyrocketing 10-fold to 5,110 units. On the other hand, those to Pakistan, Myanmar and Bangladesh all plunged.
