The British Columbia Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union - Canada (ILWU-Canada) Local 502 signed a tentative five-year collective agreement on Thursday through the mediation of the federal government, averting a 72-hour strike that would have been staged on Friday.

ILWU-Canada Local 502 had issued a strike notice on Tuesday September 3. The Canadian International Freight Forwarders Association (CIFFA) said that they had sent a letter to federal mediators urging them to use all the tools in bringing negotiations to a successful and rapid conclusion.

The Port of Vancouver is Canada's largest port. In 2017, 142 million tons of cargo moved through the port, valued at $200 billion.
