The Port of Kobe handled a total of 1.49 million TEUs of containers in the first half (January-June) of 2018, which grew 2.9% year on year to reach an all-time high, according to the city of Kobe’s Port and Urban Projects Bureau. Oceangoing containers increased 0.1% to 1.12 million TEUs, reaching the highest level since 1995. Due to heavy rain in western Japan and a typhoon that also inflicted severe damage in the region, in contrast, container throughput at the port declined 5.4% to 220,000 TEUs in July. In August, it decreased to some extent due to several big typhoons, but thanks to steadiness in exports, container movement to and from Kobe was pretty fair in general.

As for oceangoing containers, the port processed approximately 1.12 million TEUs in January-June, comprising 607,000 TEUs of exports, up 3.6%, and 508,000 TEUs of imports, down 3.8%. In breakdown, those to and from other Asia economies amounted to 910,000 TEUs, up 4.2%, holding the largest share. Exports to and imports from China accounted for 450,000 TEUs in total, up 0.9%. To and from North America, 140,000 TEUs were traded, down 19.7%, while 50,000 TEUs were moved to and from Europe, down 2.6%. Meanwhile, domestic containers numbered 380,000 TEUs, up 12.1%, which were made up of 210,000 TEUs of feeder containers, up 7.2%, and 90,000 TEUs of those carried with ferries, up 6.6%.
