The Japan Maritime Center (JMC) on March 27 unveiled a report that it had compiled with trade statistics released by the Ministry of Finance (MOF). The report indicated that containers from Japan to China shrank 7.6% from a year earlier to 746,198 tons in January, suffering a year-on-year contraction for five months in a row. In terms of value, in contrast, they jumped 37.8% to \609.2 billion, marking a double-digit improvement for 12 months running.

As for imports from China to Japan, meanwhile, the JMC said they fell 5.7% to 1,967,616 tons in January, incurring the first year-on-year decline in four months. They were valued at \1.176 trillion, which decreased 7.7% and suffered the first year-on-year contraction in nine months.
