Nittsu Research Institute and Consulting, Inc. (NRIC) recently unveiled a revision of the economic and cargo transport outlooks for fiscal 2018 (April 2018-March 2019) that it had presented earlier.

As for oceangoing containers, NRIC now projects that exports will increase 2.1% from the previous fiscal year to 5.257 million TEUs, thanks to the continuous expansion of the global economy. Meanwhile, imports are expected to grow 2.8% to 7.594 million TEUs, underpinned by the briskness in those of parts and components for production that is induced by the rise in the number of capital investment projects. In total, they are estimated to total 12.851 million TEUs, which would swell 2.5%. The think tank foresees that exports and imports will both register year-on-year growth for three consecutive years to reach all-time highs.

In respect to international airfreight, NRIC envisages that exports will hike 7.2% to 1.333 million tons, with contributing factors including the recovery in demand for semiconductors and relevant commodities. Imports are anticipated to remain massive, resulting from the continuous favorableness in those of production goods. The research institute forecasts they will climb 5.5% to 1.266 million tons, enjoying a year-on-year improvement for the third consecutive year. The total of exports and imports are predicted to inflate 6.4% to 2.599 million tons.
