The combined volume of containerized shipments that leading shipping lines moved in January among 13 countries and regions in Asia grew 19.9% from a year earlier to 863,000 TEUs, enjoying a year-on-year improvement for 10 months running. Dry and reefer containers were both brisk, enjoying double-digit increases, with the former rising 20% to 808,000 TEUs and the latter, 19.7% to 55,000 TEUs.

Japan’s exports to the 12 remaining economies hiked 17.8% to 95,000 TEUs, while its imports also registered a double-digit expansion, climbing 13% to 172,000 TEUs.

Looking at containers from Japan by destination, those to northern China went up 6.7% to 14,000 TEUs; to central China, down 2.7% to 9,000 TEUs; to Fujian Province, up 21.7% to 900 TEUs; to southern China, up 44.8% to 10,000 TEUs; to Hong Kong, up 4.3% to 8,000 TEUs; to Taiwan, up 8.2% to 11,000 TEUs; to Cambodia, up 48.2% to 200 TEUs; to Vietnam, up 25.3% to 7,000 TEUs; to Thailand, up 5.2% to 10,000 TEUs; to Malaysia, up 19.9% to 5,000 TEUs; to Singapore, up 21.9% to 2,000 TEUs; to Indonesia, up 25.4% to 5,000 TEUs; to Myanmar, up 73.3% to 200 TEUs and to the Philippines, down 5.8% to 2,000 TEUs.

As for imports to Japan, meanwhile, those from northern China were up 48.1% to 26,000 TEUs; from central China, down 0.5% to 28,000 TEUs; from Fujian, down 12.4% to 8,000 TEUs; from southern China, down 7.2% to 26,000 TEUs; from Hong Kong, down 7.9% to 7,000 TEUs; from the Philippines, up 3% to 6,000 TEUs; from Cambodia, up 69.2% to 600 TEUs; from Vietnam, up 32.2% to 14,000 TEUs; from Thailand, up 25.5% to 15,000 TEUs; from Malaysia, up 10.3% to 7,000 TEUs; from Indonesia, up 16.5% to 9,000 TEUs; from Myanmar, up 30.7% to 500 TEUs; from Taiwan, down 5.1% to 10,000 TEUs and from Singapore, down 5.1% to 2,000 TEUs.
