The Port of Yokohama processed 114.87 million tons of shipments in 2017, which increased 5.3% from the previous year and registered the first year-on-year in five years, according to preliminary port statistics unveiled by the City of Yokohama’s Port and Harbor Bureau. In breakdown, international cargo accounted for 75.46 million tons, up 9.5%, and domestic cargo, the balance of 39.412 million tons, down 1.9%.

As for containerized freight, Yokohama handled 41.359 million tons, up 6.2%. Oceangoing containers amounted to 38.56 million tons, up 6%, which consisted of 16.126 million tons of exports, up 9.1%, and 22.424 million tons of imports, up 3.9%. The remaining 2.8 million tons were containers moved domestically, up 8.8%.

In terms of TEU, containers to and from Yokohama totaled 2.93 million TEUs, up 5.3%, registering the first year-on-year growth in seven years, or since 2011, when container movement was hit hard by the Great East Japan Earthquake. International shipments accounted for 2.621 million TEUs, up 4%, marking a year-on-year improvement for two back-to-back years. They were made up of 1.401 million TEUs of exports, up 5.6%, and 1.219 million TEUs of imports, up 2.2%. Domestic containers, meanwhile, surged 17.7% to 305,700 TEUs, which also improved from a year earlier for the second consecutive year.
