Myanmar launched a pre-shipment inspection (PSI) on July 1 for shipments from South Korea. Myanmar Inspection and Testing Services (MITS), which is operated under Naypyidaw's Ministry of Commerce, is setting up overseas affiliates in other major economies in Asia. The company fears that growth in investment and shipments from other countries as a result of the nation’s liberalization will increase imports of defective secondhand, radiation-contaminated and other inferior products, having adverse impacts on the domestic economy and people’s lives.

In South Korea, MITS began preparations in May 2013 when establishing MITS Korea. It held a briefing session on its PSI system in Seoul on June 12 this year and commenced inspections on cargo destined to Myanmar on July 1. The Southeast Asian country intends to expand its PSI network to other economies in Asia, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan and Singapore.
