South Korean ports processed a total of 2.059 million TEUs of containers in May, increasing 2.7% year on year, according to a report compiled by the nation’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. Overall cargo throughput was 114.17 million tons, rising 2.4%.

Regarding containerized shipments, exports and imports accounted for 1.222 million TEUs, going up 2.7%; transshipment (T/S) containers, 824,000 TEUs, up 4.4% and coastal containers, the balance of 13,000 TEUs, down 8.9%.

By port, 1.546 million TEUs were carried to and from Busan, the busiest container port in South Korea, which climbed 2.4%. In breakdown, export and import containers rose 1.2% to 772,000 TEUs and T/S containers, 3.5% to 774,000 TEUs.

Kwangyang handled 197,000 TEUs, hiking 3.4%, of which T/S cargo surged 13.1% to 45,000 TEUs. Processing 206,000 TEUs, Inchon enjoyed a notable improvement of 9.2% thanks to increases in shipments to and from China and Southeast Asia.
