Container movement from Japan to China decreased year on year in January 2014, according to a report released by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC) on March 27. The report indicated that exports from Japan to China declined 9.8% to 772,157 tons. In contrast, imports enjoyed a double-digit improvement, surging 18.2% to 2,334,729 tons.

On a value scale, containers traded from Japan to China in January amounted to \411.4 billion, growing 2% from a year earlier. Freight rates for services on the outbound route, which had been on a downward trend since they peaked at the end of 2012, remained as weak in the quarter from September to November 2013.

Meanwhile, shipments from China to Japan were valued at \1.433 trillion, soaring 36%. As for freight rates for inbound services from China to Japan, the China Containerized Freight Index (CCFI), which began rising in the second half of July last year and fell slightly in November, has again on an upward track.
