Container throughput at the Port of Shanghai reached 33.617 million TEUs in 2013, growing 3.3% year on year to help it defend its title as the world’s busiest container port, according to statistical data unveiled by the Shanghai Municipal Transport and Port Authority.

Overall, the Chinese port handled a record volume of cargo totaling 776 million tons, which increased 5.5%.

The Port of Shenzhen in southern China processed 23.278 million TEUs of containers, which improved 1.5% and enabled it to finish in third place.

Containerized shipments went up 2.9% to 32.6 million TEUs at the Port of Singapore, which managed to come in second place.

On the other hand, containers to and from Hong Kong decreased 3.6% to 22.288 million TEUs, making the port go down to fourth, outrun by Shenzhen.
