The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), the dockworkers' union on the West Coast of North America, has decided to cut formal ties with the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organization (AFL-CIO), its umbrella labor organization.

The 40,000-member dockers union cited a lack of support from the AFL-CIO in recent jurisdiction battles with other unions including grain terminals in the Pacific Northwest where the umbrella organization's members blatantly had crossed picket lines.

''It is with regret but resolve that we have come to the point where the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) must cut formal ties with the AFL-CIO,'' said ILWU President Bobert McEllrath.
