Ports in Vietnam handled a total of 7,587,836 TEUs of containerized shipments in 2012, increasing 9.9% year on year from 6,902,630 TEUs, according to the Vietnam Seaports Association (VPA).

They failed to mark a double-digit improvement for the second consecutive calendar year due to, among other factors, service adjustments to keep pace with the stagnation of the nation’s containership market.

Ports in northern Vietnam were responsible for 5,187,789 TEUs, surging 14.4% from a year earlier and accounting for 68.4% of the total, an increase of 2.4 percentage points from 66%.

Ports in southern Vietnam processed 2,164,218 TEUs, growing a minute 0.7%, but throughput was much steadier at those in central Vietnam, which rose 7.5% to 235,823 TEUs.
