Outbound container movement from Asia to Europe amounted to 915,000 TEUs in February 2013, according to the Japan Maritime Center (JMC).

It managed to make a year-on-year improvement for two months in a row, growing a minute 0.4% from 911,700 TEUs.

However, the center said that concern about the European economy has not been eliminated.

Meanwhile, inbound containers from Europe to Asia increased 0.5% from a year earlier from 532,200 TEUs to 535,100 TEUs, the JMC said.

However, China only registered a real GDP growth rate of 7.8% in 2012, failing to mark a growth of 8% for the first time in 13 years.

As containers bound for China account for approximately 40%, it is feared that imports from Europe to Asia will be impacted more severely in the future.

In the first two months of 2013, the JMC added, exports from Asia to Europe improved 1.45% year on year to 2,212,200 TEUs, but imports decreased 3.3% to 1,058,100 TEUs.

In the first two months (January-February), exports decreased 4.9% to 1,812,966 tons in total.

On the other hand, the Tokyo-based public-interest incorporated organization added that imports from China to Japan were favorable in February, growing 6.4% from 1,342,814 tons to 1,428,660 tons, which represented the first year-on-year improvement in seven months, or since July 2012.

They enjoyed a double-digit increase on a value basis as well, soaring 31.4% to \804.8 billion.

In January and February, Japan imported a total of 3,389,581 tons, falling 5.4%.
