Asia exported 1,107,400 TEUs of containerized shipments to Europe in September 2012, according to a report released by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). The throughput was down 1.7% from a year earlier and 4.8% from a month earlier. Due to the ongoing deterioration in the European economy, it represented a year-on-year decline for seven straight months. Freight rates went down significantly to an average of $1,570 per TEU from the previous month’s $1,810 per TEU.
In the third quarter (July-September), westbound shipments from Asia to Europe amounted to 3,446,200 TEUs in total, which fell 8.5% year on year, and in the first nine months (January-September), 10,281,600 TEUs, 3.6%.
Meanwhile, eastbound containers from Europe to Asia totaled 502,900 TEUs in September, which waned 4.2% from a year earlier, the first year-on-year fall in four months, and 1.6% from a month earlier.
Freight rates went down by $140 per TEU to $1,010 per TEU on average from the $1,150 per TEU marked in August.
From July to September, Europe exported to Asia a total of 1,584,300 TEUs, diminishing 1.6% from the corresponding period of 2011, and from January to September, 4,854,300 TEUs, improving 5.9%.
