In September 2012, Japan exported 963,553 tons of containerized shipments to China, decreasing 6.5% from a year earlier and 5.7% from a month earlier, according to the Japan Maritime Center (JMC).

The JMC, which compiled a report on container trade between Japan and China from trade figured unveiled by the Ministry of Finance (MOF), explained that exports to China fell in the month in question, suffering a year-on-year decline for three months in a row, because the Chinese economy incurred a negative real GDP growth rate of 7.4% in the third quarter (July-September).

The deterioration in the diplomatic ties between Japan and China was also a major factor, added the Tokyo-based public interest corporation.

In the first nine months (January-September), exports from Japan to China amounted to 9,353,776 tons, going down 2.2% year on year.

In September, Japan imported 1,878,551 tons of containers from China, falling 6.1% from September 2011 and 2.1% from August 2012, according to the JMC report.

In the first nine months, they totaled 17,979,956 tons, declining a minute 0.5% from the corresponding period of the previous year.
