Container movement on the intra-Asia trade was steady in September 2012, increasing 3.6% year on year from 1.209 million TEUs to 1.253 million TEUs.
Throughput among 13 economies in the region was much more robust in the first nine months (January-September), swelling 7.7% from 10.112 million TEUs to 10.894 million TEUs in total.
In September, exports from Japan went down 1% to 175,000 TEUs, but imports to Japan rose 6% to 206,000 TEUs.
By destination, containers destined to South Korea went up 3.4% to 14,000 TEUs, but those to China fell 6.4% to 62,000 TEUs.
On the other hand, those to Taiwan and Hong Kong were both favorable, surging 10.9% to 18,000 TEUs and 19.2% to 14,000 TEUs, respectively.
As for exports to Southeast Asia, those to the Philippines were massive, soaring 17% to 6,400 TEUs.
In contrast those to Thailand and Cambodia both declined minutely, going down 0.3% to 26,000 TEUs and 0.7% to 600 TEUs, respectively.
Containers to Malaysia, Vietnam and Singapore all suffered double-digit decreases, plunging 14% to 7,700 TEUs, 11.7% to 7,300 TEUs and 12% to 4,400 TEUs, respectively.
Exports to Myanmar amounted to 900 TEUs.
In the first nine months, Japan’s exports and imports were both brisk, with the former climbing 3.6% to 1.253 million TEUs and the latter, 7.7% to 1.868 million TEUs.
