In the first half (January-June) of 2012, the Port of Kobe handled 1,280,175 TEUs of containerized shipments, decreasing 3% from a year earlier, which represented the first year-on-year decline in three years.

In breakdown, containers to and from other countries accounted for 1,030,290 TEUs, falling 1%.

By region, those to and from other Asian economies increased 1% to 770,000 TEUs, enjoying the largest share of the pie.

Exports to and imports from North America remained nearly unchanged, amounting to 170,000 TEUs, and those to and from Europe plunged 25% to 80,000 TEUs.

Meanwhile, containerized shipments to and from other domestic ports went down 9% to 250,000 TEUs.

The domestic total included 13,000 TEUs handled in feeder services, which waned 11%, and 70,000 TEUs moved in ferry services, which almost leveled off.

The overall volume of shipments processed at the port in the six-month period in question was 43,790,000 tons, climbing 2% year on year.

The throughput was made up of 24,820,000 tons of foreign-trade shipments, going up 1%, and 18,970,000 tons of domestic shipments, up 3%.

Breaking down the former, exports totaled 11,310,000 tons, up 1%, including 8,350,000 tons of those to other Asian nations, up 4%; 1,540,000 tons to North America, up 6%; and 650,000 tons to Europe, down 28%.

Imports improved 1% to 13,510,000 tons, of which those from other Asian countries accounted for 7,720,000 tons, up 6%, and 3,120,000 tons from North America, down 10%.
