A total of 17,525,472 TEUs of loaded and unloaded export and import containers were handled at 64 foreign-trade container ports in Japan in 2011, increasing 4% from a year earlier, according to a definite-value report on container statistics released by the Harbor Modernization Promotion Committee (HMPC).
The five largest ports (Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka and Kobe) were responsible for 13,688,032 TEUs, a growth of 3.8%.
Combined container throughput at 12 major ports (the abovementioned five ports and Kawasaki, Chiba, Shimizu, Yokkaichi, Shimonoseki, Kitakyushu and Hakata) accounted for 15,642,676 TEUs, which improved 4.3%. The other 54 ports processed 1,882,796 TEUs in total, going up 1.2%.
Looking at loaded export containers, 5,714,667 TEUs were transported to and from the 64 ports in 2011, which went down 2.8% year on year, the Tokyo-based general incorporated foundation added.
To and from the five leading ports, 4,494,022 TEUs were transported, going down 3.2%; the 12 ports, 5,217,454 TEUs, down 2.2%; and the 54 local ports, 497,213 TEUs, down 8.6%.
As for loaded import containers, 8,137,975 TEUs were handled at the 64 ports in 2011, which represented an improvement of 6.1% from the previous calendar year.
Combined throughput amounted to 6,488,882 TEUs at the five ports, swelling 5.9%; 7,312,268 TEUs at the 12 ports, 6.1%; and 825,707 TEUs at the 54 ports, 6.2%.
