Container volumes on intra-Asia trades (among 12 Asian economies) registered a double-digit increase of 12.7% in April, to 1.289 million TEUs, compared to 1.144 million TEUs for the same period last year.

For the first four months, the box throughput totaled 4.769 million TEUs, up 10.8% compared to 4.304 million TEUs in the same period in 2011.

Containerized exports from Japan rose 9.3% from a year earlier to 563,000 TEUs in April while imports climbed 7.0% on year to 224,000 TEUs.

In the four-month period, Japan's exports increased 9.3% from the same period last year to 563,000 TEUs while its imports showed a steady growth of 7.0% to 612,000 TEUs in the period.
