Container traffic on the intra-Asia trade was brisk in July 2011, achieving a double-digit increase from a year earlier.

The combined volume of containerized shipments handled by major shipping companies among 12 other Asian economies (including Japan) was 1.213 million TEUs, surging 15.9% from 1.046 million TEUs.

Exports from Japan recovered to nearly level off from July 2010, going down a mere 0.8% to 183,000 TEUs, although the throughput represented a year-on-year decrease for the fifth consecutive month.

On the other hand, imports to Japan were robust, soaring 14.3% to 229,000 TEUs, which was the first growth in three months.

On an accumulated scale, a total of 7.732 million TEUs were moved on the intra-Asia trade in the first seven months of 2011, going up 5.7% from the corresponding period of 2010.

Exports from Japan declined 8.8% to 1.188 million TEUs but showed a sign of recovery as a double-digit fall was marked a month earlier while imports to Japan rose 3.9% to 1.408 million TEUs.
