The four-day-long strike by container truck drivers that had crippled cargo operation in the Indian port of Chennai was called off Tuesday night after negotiations between the truck drivers, port officials and trade representatives.

The strike called by the South Zone Motor Transporters’ Welfare Association on Thursday night, protesting the alleged assault of one of their coworkers by a port official.

The four-day strike had exerted adverse affect on container cargo flows to and from the terminals at Chennai with backlogs of more than 20,000 containers. The long queue of trucks parked along the arterial roads also had been a serious hindrance.
