The South Korea/China trade saw a double-digit increase in container movement in the first quarter (January-March) of 2011, according to the Yellow Sea Liner Committee (YSLC).

A total of 601,056 TEUs of containers were moved between South Korea and China, which grew 11.2% from the 540,394 TEUs handled in the corresponding three months of 2010.

In breakdown, local shipments were favorable, surging 19.5%, but feeder shipments were not, plunging 16.7% to 103,297 TEUs.

Returning to the trade’s overall volume, rises of more than 10% were registered on both directions, said the committee, which is made up of shipping companies providing container services between South Korea and China.

Container movement from South Korea to China rose 11% to 259,125 TEUs, and that from China to South Korea was as brisk, improving 11.4% to 306,970 TEUs.

Local cargoes were robust, with those from South Korea to China jumping 14.7% to 224,698 TEUs and those from China to South Korea, a more significant 23.8% to 273,061 TEUs, the YSLC added.

On the other hand, feeder cargoes were not, as those from South Korea to China waned 8.2% to 34,427 TEUs, and those from China to South Korea were even worth, going down 20.3% to 68,870 TEUs.
