In August, Shanghai became the busiest container port in the world.

Containerized shipments handled at the Chinese port during the first eight months of 2010 were also greater in volume than those processed at the Port of Singapore.

Throughput at Shanghai was 2.63 million TEUs in August, up 21.2% year on year, and 19.056 million TEUs for the eight months from January to August, up 19.1%.

Meanwhile, Singapore handled 2.4265 million TEUs in August, up 6.6%. From January to August, container lifting at Singapore was 19.011 million TEUs, which was up 13.2% from a year earlier, but 6.8% down from the corresponding eight months of 2008, meaning that it failed to return to where it was when the world did not yet plunge into the recent financial turmoil.
