In August 2010, a total of 13.1295 million TEUs of containers were handled in Chinese ports, up 20.6% from a year earlier, according to an announcement made by the Ministry of Transport.

In breakdown, coastal ports processed 11.8578 million TEUs, up 20.8 percent, and inland river ports, 1.2717 million TEUs, up 18.6 percent.

On an accumulated scale, 94.7457 million TEUs were transported to and from China from January to August, pushing the figure to the highest mark ever.

Coastal and inland river ports both marked year-on-year improvement of more than 20%, with the former responsible for 85.3999 TEUs, up 21.6%, and the latter, 8.109 million TEUs, which was an all-time high, up 21.5%.

From the corresponding eight months of 2008, when the world did not yet plunge into the recent financial crisis, the total was up 13.4%; coastal ports, 10.6%; and inland river ports, 27.2 percent.
