The Japan Transport and Tourism Research Institute (JTTRI), a Tokyo-based think tank, last Friday signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with the Indian Ports Association (IPA) and the Centre for Maritime Economy and Connectivity (CMEC) to have research collaboration and other projects for five years.

Established in 1966, the IPA provides consulting services on port and harbor facilities and supports policy making with the aim of promoting the growth and development of all major ports in India and integrating the nation’s maritime industry. Meanwhile, the CMEC was set up in 2023 to realize national strategies on maritime affairs.

Planning to open a local office in India around this fall, the JTTRI is working to form networks, build relationships of trust, and cooperation with public and private parties in India and other countries in South Asia.

The JTTRI has confirmed while having interchanges with the IPA and the CMEC that it shares common interests with them in researching maritime affairs. The institute believes that promoting collaboration contributes to high-quality research and the development of the port and harbor as well as other parts of the maritime industry in the Indo-Pacific region, and the belief has led to the recent MoUs.
