Japan’s six major ports processed 1.21 million TEUs of oceangoing containers in March, up 1.2% year on year, according to the nation’s transport ministry. Exports accounted for 616,578 TEUs, up 4.8%, and imports, 594,926 TEUs, down 2.2%.

Individually, Tokyo handled 353,753 TEUs, down 0.8%, of which exports jumped 9.4% to 167,458 TEUs, but imports fell 8.4% to 186,295 TEUs. Throughput at Kawasaki plunged 20.4% to 7,225 TEUs, with exports decreasing 14.2% to 3,755 TEUs, and imports, 26.1% to 3,470 TEUs. Containers to and from Yokohama improved 6.3% to 252,648 TEUs, consisting of 138,387 TEUs of exports, up 6.2%, and 114,261 TEUs of imports, up 6.3%. Nagoya was responsible for 223,498 TEUs, down 2.2%, exporting 116,463 TEUs, down 1.7%, and 107,035 TEUs of imports, down 2.8%. Osaka exported 88,395 TEUs, up 11.6%, and imported 94,893 TEUs, down 5.8%, for a total of 183,288 TEUs, up 1.8%. Container throughput amounted to 191,092 TEUs at Kobe, up 3.4%, which comprised 102,120 TEUs of exports, down 0.9%, and 88,972 TEUs of imports, up 8.8%.
