Chinese ports handled 120.35 million TEUs of containers in the first four months (January-April), up 7.2% year on year, according to the nation's transport ministry. Coastal ports were responsible for 106.08 million TEUs, up 7.4%, and inland river ports, 14.26 million TEUs, up 6.1%.

Total cargo throughput amounted to 5.93 billion tons, up 3.1%, which consisted of 3.86 billion tons at coastal ports, up 4.4%, and 2.07 billion tons at inland river ports, up 0.8%.

Looking at volumes at major coastal ports, Shanghai processed 18.96 million TEUs, up 7%; Ningbo-Zhoushan, 15.25 million TEUs, up 12.4%; Shenzhen, 12.16 million TEUs, up 7.2%; Qingdao, 11.53 million TEUs, up 8.1%; and Guangzhou, 9.13 million TEUs, up 3.2%. Xiamen handled 3.89 million TEUs, down 0.7%, the only port that incurred negative growth among the top 10.
