Asia’s container exports to Europe amounted to 1.64 million TEUs in March, up 1.7% year on year for five consecutive months of growth and a new record for the month in question, according to statistics compiled by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC) from data provided by the U.K.’s Container Trades Statistics (CTS).
By origin, exports from China and Hong Kong accounted for 1.24 million TEUs, up 0.9%; other parts of Northeast Asia, 162,864 TEUs, up 0.3%; and Southeast Asia, 240,364 TEUs, up 7.1%.
By destination, 986,815 TEUs were bound for North Europe, up 2.1%; 317,635 TEUs for the Western Mediterranean, up 3.4%; and 335,275 TEUs for the Eastern Mediterranean, down 1.1%, which could have been impacted by the ongoing Middle East situation.
In the first three months (January-March), Asia exported 5.128 million TEUs to Europe, up 15% for a new record for the first quarter. The JMC projects that container demand will remain steady.
By origin, 4.08 million TEUs were from China, up 17.7%; 428,994 TEUs from other parts of Northeast Asia, up 1.2%; and 663,195 TEUs from Southeast Asia, up 9.1%.
By destination, 3.14 million TEUs were to Europe, up 15.4%; 990,206 TEUs to the Western Mediterranean, up 15%; and 1.05 million TEU to the Eastern Mediterranean, up 13.7%.
