El Nino is highly likely--with a probability of 98%--to emerge in the three months from November this year through January next year, according to the latest projection by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
In the Panama Canal, El Nino could lower the water levels of Gatun Lake to some extent if it is strong or very strong. If so, the waterway would impose vessel passage restrictions. When El Nino emerged last time, the Panama Canal began passage restrictions within six months. As such, the phenomenon is feared to become a new risk for global supply chains.
The Panama Canal is, however, not planning vessel passage restrictions for the remainder of this year even if an El Ni?o weather pattern begins in the second half as predicted, potentially leading to another drought in the Central American country.
