The Port of Tsuruga in Fukui Prefecture, Japan is scheduled to have an additional gantry crane in its Mariyama Minami District this fiscal year after a second multipurpose crane became operational in April in its Mariyama Kita District.

The Fukui Prefectural Government is working to increase cargo handling equipment (large cranes for freighters) to keep pace with growth in the size of cargo carriers calling the Port of Fukui and help the port enhance its backup capabilities for cases in which existing cargo handling equipment is out of order.

As of May, two multipurpose cranes are in service in the Mariyama Kita District for coal and other bulk cargo, while the Mariyama Minami Districts has a gantry crane for containerized shipments.

The one installed in the Mariyama Kita District in April is a double-jib level luffing crane with a maximum bucket capacity of 14 cubic meters, a lifting capacity of some 59 tons, a cargo handling capacity of 800 tons per hour, an operating range of 11 to 40.5 meters, a head of 37.8 meters (total head), a hoisting speed of 1.67 meters per second, and a running speed of 0.75 meters per second.

The one to be added to the Mariyama Minami District will be able to accommodate 50,000-deadweight-ton vessels, 2.5 times as large as the existing one, which can only handle containers to and from 20,000-deadweight-ton containerships. It will be capable of processing 13 rows and five tiers of containers on deck, which will be greater by 1.3 times than the existing one, which can only handle 10 rows and five tiers of containers. It will have a back reach of nine meters, a rail span of 16 meters, a total height of 45 meters, and a rated load of 35.6 tons.
