U.S. container imports from Japan amounted to 54,837 TEUs in March (based on volumes at ports of origin), down 8% year on year but up 28.7% month on month, Descartes Datamyne announced yesterday.
Direct shipments plunged 14.5% from a year earlier to 36,243 TEUs, but those transshipped on the way expanded 8% to 18,594 TEUs, which accounted for 33.9% of the total, up five percentage points from the previous month.
In the first quarter (January-March), containers from Japan to the U.S. added up to 147,832 TEUs, down 5.1% from the corresponding months of 2025.
Direct shipments came to 96,648 TEUs, down 10.6%. From Tokyo, 36,704 TEUs were shipped, down 13.6%; from Nagoya, 28,501 TEUs, down 13.4%; from Kobe, 22,874 TEUs, down 16.8%; from Yokohama, 9,092 TEUs, up 21.7%; and from Osaka, 2,164 TEUs, up 165.8%.
As for transshipment containers, 34,373 TEUs were via South Korea, up 20.4%; 9,701 TEUs via China, up 25.6%; and 4,517 TEUs via Taiwan, down 28.4%.
