The Port of Kitakyushu in southwestern Japan handled 36,361 TEUs of foreign-trade containers in July, up 11.2% year on year, according to the Kitakyushu Seaport and Airport Bureau. Exports and imports both increased by double digits as well, jumping 11.9% to 18,513 TEUs and 10.5% to 17,848 TEUs, respectively.
Meanwhile, domestic containers totaled 8,944 TEUs, down 5.2%, for a foreign-domestic combined volume of 45,305 TEUs, up 7.6%.
In terms of volume, exports amounted to 450,000 tons, up 4.3%, and imports, 1.5 million tons, down 9.1%, aggregating 1.95 million tons, down 6.3%. Domestic containers weighed 6.4 million tons, down 4.2%, for a total volume of 8.35 million tons, down 4.7%.
In the first seven months (January-July), Kitakyushu processed 248,457 TEUs of foreign-trade containers, up 2.1%, of which 125,497 TEUs were exported, up 3%, and 122,960 TEUs were imported, up 1.1%. Domestic containers added up to 55,834 TEUs, down 2%, making the foreign-domestic total 304,291 TEUs, up 1.3%.
In volume, exports came to 3.33 million tons, up 7.5%, and imports, 10.25 million tons, down 8.5%, for a total of 13.58 million tons, down 5%. Including 42.07 million tons of domestic containers, down 4.1%, overall throughput amounted to 55.64 million tons, down 4.4%.
