Chinese ports handled 294.21 million TEUs of containers in the first 10 months (January-October), up 6.4% year on year, according to the nation’s transport ministry. Coastal ports were responsible for 259.08 million TEUs, up 6.6%, and inland river ports, 3,513 TEUs, up 4.7%.
Looking at individual volumes, Shanghai processed 46.97 million TEUs, up 6.5%, holding the largest share of the pie. Shanghai was followed by Ningbo-Zhoushan, where 36.27 million TEUs were handled, up 10.5%; Shenzhen, 29.34 million TEUs, up 6.1%; Qingdao, 27.62 million TEUs, up 7.2%; and Guangzhou, 22.78 million TEUs, up 4.8%.
Overall cargo throughput amounted to 15.135 billion tons, up 4.3%. Foreign-trade cargo accounted for 4.67 billion tons ,up 3.7%, of which 4.19 billion tons were moved to and from coastal ports, up 3.6%, and 482.49 million tons to and from inland river ports, up 4.3%
